After a long drive we stopped in Te Anau for lunch before heading over to Milford sound. There was some beautiful scenery on the way and we stopped for pictures along the route.
Milford has a population of 170 people and the town consists of a cafe, a port for cruises and a shell fish farm ! After booking a tour for the following day we checked in to our hostel. We cooked dinner and played some cards in the common room before heading to bed.
Our tour started at 9.30am so we were at the port early. The boat cruise was very scenic and we had some good weather as we travelled along the sound (it is actually a fjord being carved out by a glacier, and not a sound - that is carved out by water). We had good views of Mitres peak and the snow capped mountains. We also saw some fur seals but the fjordland crested penguins were not to be seen even though the captain saw one in the water. The cruise was 1.5hrs and was well worth it.
We then headed back across the country to Dunedin, stopping only for lunch. It was a long drive but with some good scenery.
Milford Sound Lodge - Good place to stay to get on an early cruise. Warm rooms and good common room
Cruising Milford Sound - Cheapest boat and smallest, but really good and get free coffee and Muffin in the morning !
