Resting On Site

The Church In Albert

Reminders Of The War

I Did Get One Geocache

Day 5 - Friday 11th May

Left our night stop & headed East about 180miles to the town of Albert on the Somme. A proper camp site this time for a couple of nights while we visit some of the WW1 sites in the area. Fortunately these still shines & it is a lovely day.

After arriving about 1pm &setting up & unwinding we went off to visit the Somme museum set in the underground tunnel by the famous church. On the top of the spire there is a gold statue of the Madonna holding out a baby Jesus. This church was bombed incessantly during the war & the statue was knocked over on it’s side but did not fall off. The story that went around was that when the statue fell the war would end. The statue did fall off early in 1918.

Then after picking up a cycle route map from the tourist office we returned to the site to finish off the last of the bread pudding.
