Birds: Great-crested Flycatcher

To celebrate John's birthday, we had breakfast at Cracker Barrel in Corpus, then drove out to Padre – PINS. We birded all the places we knew and recognized that we have not been in this area this late in the season – there was not the large number of birds that we are used to seeing. We talked with Buzz a bit, then went to visit Max and Joann, and had a good visit. They are leaving in 2 weeks to head to Jackson as well.

We checked out birds under the bridge and Hans Suter, with ‘lupper’ at Jason’s Deli around 2pm. Traffic was backed up on SPID, so we didn’t get back here till around 4, and enjoyed sitting outdoors for the rest of the afternoon/evening. Found the Great-crested Flycatcher, and while we were watching that, a Red-tailed Hawk hovered over the field next to us – we had never seen a Redtail hover – amazing. It used that huge tail to hold itself against forward movement, and barely moved its wings, holding itself steady. Learn something new every day!
