Contrary to rumors, we are still alive and well, back in Mebane NC. We just have been slack in not publishing an up-to-date blog entry, so here it goes:

Christmas in Durham

We decided to spend 2017 Christmas in Durham this year to be near Rick’s Mom who now lives in Cary. We bunked at son Bryan’s home, had Mom over to bake cookies, and then had a Christmas dinner with Bryan, Alison, and Noah, and son Ken and Trudie with Isaac and Darby. Granddaughter Alex was down with a bad cold. But Mom was Queen for the Day and she basked in all her glory. She said it was the best Christmas for her in a long time.

Flu B and Sinusitis

Betsy came down with the B strain of the flu but suffered no disabling effects. She’s over it. Rick had a severe case of sinusitis with accompanying drip and cough, but he’s over it too. Other than that we are enjoying very good health.

DASH dieting

Both of us are using the DASH diet to lose some weight. Betsy is down 16 and Rick has lost 31. Yea!

Even better, Rick’s BP is down to the 10x/5x’s and glucose is right at normal. He’s cut both medications and aiming to cut some more.

Skip & Jan visit

We thoroughly enjoyed a visit from long-time friends Skip & Jan Boyd from Maggie Valley NC. We spent hours catching up on families and solving all the world’s problems but balanced that out with eating. We – watching out for carbohydrates, of course – went out to lunch and dinner 4 times.

MBSP weather

We’re not sure how the weather was where you are, but in Myrtle Beach, we suffered through the coldest winter in 50 years. The temp did not get above freezing the first week of January, and we had a ¾ inch layer of frozen rain with an inch of snow on top. Yuk!

Finishing up at MBSP

January and February were spent completing projects for the Nature Center at the park: sewing, preparing for the Amazing Adventure Challenge race, painting, and putting up signs on the hiking trails.

Back to Mebane

Mid-February found us back in Mebane NC for a couple of months, visiting Mom, the kids, and of course, doctors. Today 3/2 we are trying to stay on the ground as the wind is coming through at 35-50 mph. But the sun is out!

We have found a couple of places to go hiking nearby. Our first outing was to the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area in Hillsborough NC. It was a Moderate trail lying between I-85 and the Eno River. It is the highest point in NC from the ocean. Some of the trail was pretty steep but we made it. Our next venture is Lake Michael Park here in Mebane.

Summer 2018

We have accepted a paid position for this summer at Camp Hatteras on Cape Hatteras from April 19 to just after Labor Day. It is a 400-site campground lying between the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound at Waves NC. Betsy will be taking reservations in an air-conditioned office while Rick will be doing Security details in a different type of air-conditioning. Our shift is 3pm to 11pm. That leaves Betsy time for sewing projects and the swimming pool while Rick goes fishing and clamming.

So that’s where we’re at for now – would like to hear from you or have you visit us – either in Mebane or Cape Hatteras. Will try to write more frequently and be sure to look for pictures of Rick’s surf fishing adventures.

Love to all,

Rick (and Betsy)
