We finally got a selfie with a quokka (Rottnest's famous marsupial)
The gateway to our Australian adventure was Perth. Situated on the banks of the Swan River, it is a city with a modern skyline. In contrast, further to the west, its port of Freemantle (Freo) still has many original Victorian buildings. We celebrated Australia Day (January 26th) sampling beer and watching a spectacular 30-minute firework display with about ΒΌ million Aussies. We also spent one day on Rottnest Island (11 miles off the mainland) with bikes, beaches and members of its only indigenous population: the friendly quokkas.
