|We left our apartment in Vienna, a short u-bahn and tram ride to the airport, to go to a hotel 'closer' to the airport. We took the u-bahn to Karlsplatz, found the Oper station and boarded the tram towards Joseph Baden. It travelled above ground. We saw that the city is filled with old 18th century buildings mixed in with modern. Old baroque stands proudly with their rounded corners and turrets. A neat ride.
Across from us sat a Polish now Canadian couple. It had been 35 years since they had been here. Of course he knew where to get off. We'd follow. What could have changed? Well apparently lots. He too had to count stations. We got off at SCS....Shopping Center Sud.
Before us, after we went through the underpass, stood a huge shopping center. To the north a short 1/2 km away was our hotel...the Best Western Smart Hotel. Unfortunately it is 17k and a 40 min. drive...taxi...from the airport. This meant we still had to be up at 5a for our 9a flight!
Well we made the flight and the connection in Frankfurt without mishap. Gord managed some sleep, I finished my book.
Gord managed to stay up to 5p while I was asleep by 4p. We awoke at 12.30a and read till 3a. We checked out and caught the 5a bus to the skytrain to city center and 257 to the ferry. We missed the 6.20 by 5 min. After a smooth sailing we were on the Island Connector for the 2 hour ride north by 10.30a.
Home is still here...looks good.
Yes we enjoyed our trip. Each country had its highlights...some had many. Lots of good memories that will stay with us.
