A free day in Tallinn, which gave me the opportunity to walk around the Old Town at my own pace. Visited the derelict area where all foreign visitors arrived, before being strictly escorted by the KGB to the Viru Hotel, the only hotel in Estonia where foreigners were permitted to stay. Afterwards I went to the Viru Hotel and did their KGB tour. Officially the hotel only had 22 stories, but the KGB worked on the 23rd floor. The hotel was specially built to allow for extensive tapping and spying. Visited a room which had been left just as it was when the KGB disappeared overnight. Also climbed and walked along the short section of the city wall, built in the 13th century, that tourists can still access.
