Left quite late today. Again we took an alternative route using the Tour du Val du Garbet. Climbed through an 'enchanted forest' and then descended to a river where we had our morning snack at picnic tables outside a canoe centre. The climb then started up to the Col. We contoured around a mountain for much of the day. Paths varied in quality from very good to very narrow (width of our shoe) on a very steep slope of thick tufts of grass. Tricky walking. Some areas were extremely rocky making difficult walking. We passed through steep pastures (no animals to be seen) and various types of forest. There were also sink holes/drops into underground caves around the mountain. For lunch we perched on an old stone wall across an open grassy area. Had a great view from up high. Finally we descended the mountain to the village of Le Trein d'Ostou, which took an hour. The usual time to drop down off a mountain. Had a late snack next to the river at the bottom before the final climb up the other side of the valley , to our gîte in St Lizier. It was a lovely place with a nice feel to it. We hadn't seen anyone all day on the trail but as I walked around St Lizier I met another GR10 guy who had seen Helen and I in a supermarket in Banyères de Luchon 6 days ago. He recognised me and was able to pass on greetings from Mark, the U.K. guy, who he'd seen on the track and had mentioned the 2 Australian women!! We chatted for awhile and found he was also walking the full length (peter from
Belgium). All french people at dinner with us and all walking the GR10 .. but in small stages over time.
