We visited the Oregon Dunes Recreational Area near Florence today. Florence, Oregon is best known for the massive sand dunes that stretch southward to Reedsport. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is the largest expanse of coastal dunes in the country, they cover a 40-mile stretch of coast with hundreds of miles of trails making it an ideal location for hiking, dune buggy riding and playing.

Over the years, winds have carved out the sand to form dunes of up to 500 feet above sea level. Off-roading is allowed in three designated areas for ATVs and dune buggies. Visitors can take a self-guided tour by renting an ATV from several rentals in the area or by bringing their own. There are several companies in the area that offer tours.

We enjoyed watching the buggies climb to the top of the hills. We had hoped to drive right down to the beach, they have had so much rain the road to the beach was flooded. We saw a lot of nice trails and camping areas in the area as well. Vickie and Sam are planning a visit in July, I can’t wait to take them on one of the tours. Check back later for more from Oregon.
