One waterfall of many on Milford Sound

White water near Marian Lake, on the road to Milford

Milford Sound scene

We left Queenstown bright and early for the long drive to Milford Sound. We passed thru Te Anau and decided to book a hostel and return to this town for the night.

The road to Milford Sound, on the coast of Fiordland , is pretty exciting and includes a 1.2 km tunnel right thru the middle of a mountain that got in the way of the road building. The traffic is only one way, and there is a set of traffic lights at each end so there is usually a bit of a wait to get through, but that allows for appreciating the awesome scenery.

There are numerous cruise boats available for 1.5 to 2.5 hour cruises,so there wasn't much of a wait to get out on the water. Cost ranged from $80pp to about $150pp if you wanted food and drink. We chose $80 and we pretty happy with our cruise. I had been using my phone for photos, but it gave out mid-cruise so switched to my iPad. Many more photos of mountains, rocks, glaciers and waterfalls might be coming your way!
