Me in front of Mt Fitz Roy

Another view of Fitz Roy

What a great place for afternoon tea!

Lago Capri

Another one of me getting in the way of a good view!

We left early from Rio Gallegos for the drive to El Chalten, passing through some very barren countryside on the way, and also some beautiful views. We were expecting a very long day but Rob our driver found a short cut (on the bitumen this time!) so we made good time. On the way we stopped at Hotel La Leona which is supposed to be the place where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid holed out for a while. We discovered it was 14,468km from Sydney!

And finally we have reached El Chalten, only a couple of days late! We have two full days here (not three as originally planned) to explore Los Glaciares National Park and the weather forecast for tomorrow is good so we are planning a hike in the mountains and hopefully a good view of Mt Fitz Roy. Sunday weather is supposed to be no good so we will make the most of our trek tomorrow.

It's now Saturday and as predicted the weather has been beautiful. A group of us set off for a 6 hour or so hike in Los Glaciares National Park. The views of Mt Fitz Roy were spectacular, as were all the views along the hike. It was easy going with only a few steep bits and we arrived back in El Chalten around 4pm and treated ourselves to coffee and cake - we figured we'd earned it!

Rain is predicted for tomorrow so we'll have to wait and see if we can do another hike.

It's now Sunday and we managed to get another hike in this morning - windy but not too bad. We hiked up the Cerro Torre track, intending to go only to the viewpoint, about 1.5hrs each way. The track was very steep to begin with but it was a lovely walk. At the viewpoint we stopped for a snack and the weather started closing in - good job I got my photo early on! We headed back down pretty soon as we were getting cold, and it rained all the way down. On the walk back to the hostel it felt like sleet, so the afternoon was spent having a snooze in our lovely warm room before heading out for dinner.

Tomorrow night we were planning to bush camp on our way to Ushuaia, but with 60km/hr winds predicted plans have changed and we are staying in a hotel instead - most of us are quite pleased about this! We are leaving at 8am and have a long drive.
