Monday 27 Feb – Tuesday 28. Pucon-Caburgua.
Arrived 10:30 am into Pucon. Fortunately our bus was the only one at the station and we had the place to ourselves, although a young man watched us for about 30 mins ,we had a brief conversation using google translate. Took near 3 hrs to build bikes, had problems with cross threaded nut for a bike rack, then both pumps failed ! At least the sun was out, about 30C. Bike shop only 2 blocks away, bought new pump , fixed one of ours. Pucon is the adventure town of the area, ..think small Queenstown…loads of rafting/ kayaking/ hiking and tours to thermal springs around the 3 volcanoes. Visit to info centre, English speaking man gave 3 camp grounds options. We food shopped and set up at what we thought was a v quiet camp …wrong!...loads of young people arrived about 8pm and partied til 4 am !!...and all the local dogs barked all night. Got away from camp bout 10am, decided to go 20 k north to lake Caburgua and take an unsealed back road ….at 3 k ..got stuck in the volcanic sand..so took the main road. Cycle lanes for only 5k, then the busy road. Easy biking, didn’t really notice the gradual climb of 450m. Farm land, timber mills, road side stalls, honey, marmalades, cheese. Stopped at Los Ojos de Caburgua waterfalls and enjoyed local cheese and bread. Then the heavy rain started and didn’t stop til morning. After 5ks to the lake, we were the wettest we have ever been on the bikes. Everything was grey, couldn’t see the lake. Relief to get a cabana for the night and to dry all our gear. Yes…we are enjoying ourselves
