My Trip To Italy travel blog

Sunday:

I again woke to loud noises in the entryway around 8am. This time it sounded like a man and a woman having a kind of loud discussion. I got up and opened the shutter and saw it was sunny out at least so I showered and ate breakfast in the kitchen. The maid showed up and we again tried to communicate and had some success. Her name is Antenella and her father lives in Miami. Her sister lives in Spain and that was about as much as we were able to discuss. I finished up and went on my journey to Sicily, Messina more specifically.

.

Well MapQuest wasn't entirely correct and had me walking in circles but I did run into what looked like a flea market with all kinds of interesting things for sale. I thought about buying something to bring back but didn't want to carry it with me and didn't want to take the time. I took a chance and headed towards the water and went south of where I was yesterday. I saw a sign that said Porto so I thought I was heading in the right direction and continued on. I found the Liberty Lines station which is the one that had the brochure. I went to buy a ticket and found that they had a round trip ticket for only 6,50 euros but again they only took cash. Soon the boat showed up and it was a pretty decent sized boat with 12 seats across and 12 deep just in the front of it. There was more in the back too. After we were all seated the boat took off and I was hoping it would go fast but instead it just cruised along slowly. The water was calm there and the sun was shining but there wasn't anyplace to go outside and check it out. I started to think about what I needed to get done before I check out tomorrow morning and there was some sort of discussion with Carmelo the owner that I owed him for 3 hours of something. I don't know what that was as he was not able to explain it to me so I just figured I would get in touch with him later. I also need to book the complementary ride to the airport even though I am staying at a hotel that night since I have to leave so early in the morning. I wanted to be closer and to have a ride there that early.

.

The boat docked at Messina and since I didn't have a map of the area I was very careful to remember where I was going. It wasn't that difficult though since everything lead down to the docks and it would just be a matter of walking back to the Liberty Lines station. Messina was pretty boring on a Sunday as I guessed everyone was at church or having a day of rest. Not many places were open and not many people were around. I walked around and took photos making sure I kept track of how to get back. I wandered down a street to a bridge and found where the train station is and saw how many train tracks there were. I kept going until the road ended in a "T" which overlooked the Strait and I think was Calabria in the background. I did take some photos there too as it was a pretty cool spot with the sun out and the water so blue. I walked back as I was getting hungry and did find a restaurant just after the bridge but the menu was in Italian. I tried to translate it but had too much difficulty so I decided to head back to Calabria to eat instead. I ended up taking an earlier boat back although the guy tried to charge me more for it but when I asked why he didn't have a great answer so I just ignored him and walked off. The boat arrived and I sat down and fell asleep for part of the ride back. When I woke up I saw a cute little dog in the aisle and the woman behind me was talking to him. He would get so excited that he wagged his butt and went over to say hi. Then a little girl started talking to the dog in Italian and it was very cute. A woman behind me started singing a song in Italian and it was nice. When we docked I saw the sun setting so I quickly found a spot where I could get some photos of it before it went behind the clouds. I found a good spot near where the flea market was this morning right along the walkway.

.

It's pretty amazing how close my place is to the beach and to the Porto. I made my way back to my place, dropped my stuff off and heated up the leftover pizza from last night. After I finished eating I went walking again to find that Laundromat since Carmelo didn't respond to my text. I walked all around hitting the streets I had walked on before but could not find that Laundromat. I was sure I saw it on Saturday but I just couldn't remember where. I did find the store that I had stopped at on Saturday only this time I was armed with some cash to buy what I tried to buy before, something to bring back home and share. I walked back to my room and laid down for about 30 minutes to nap.

.

When I woke up I decided to hand wash a few clothes to wear home and hoped they dried in time. I also sent Carmelo an email about the shuttle for tomorrow morning to the airport. He finally responded at 10:30 and that the shuttle, the complimentary shuttle would cost 10,00 euros. I guess their definition of complimentary isn't the same as ours.

.

I crashed shortly afterwards and had a decent night's sleep.
