Monica and Nick's World Adventure travel blog

We left Napier and drove up the coast. We were thinking of driving all the way around the bay but the roads were not great and the weather was coming in so we took a short cut to get to Whakatane.

Whakatane is a port town where tours to the White Island are run from. This is the only active volcano in New Zealand so we thought we should pay a visit ! We checked into our hostel and then took a walk around town to the japanese gardens and down to the waterfront. It is quite a sleepy little town and is nice to stroll around.

Unfortunately the white island tour was cancelled due to bad weather ! So we decided to head up to Tauranga instead of waiting around.

Karibu backpackers - Fairly cheap hostel with good rooms and well laid out ($46)
