Wow - Albert Facey lived here in Wickepin!

typical size of a country town in 1913 - now almost deserted...

Here it is - Baart the big ram!

Off to the pub in Katanning to get warm ....

.... and it had an awesome fire!

Saturday August 28

Well the plan had been to stay in Wagin overnight, but apart from Baart, the Big Ram, there was nothing else to see so we kept cruising!

Lots more “countryside” – and it is beautiful, especially as there has been lots of rain and everything is so green. Unfortunately the wind is a killer and cuts you in half.

One of the surprises of the day was passing through a small place called Witchepin where Albert Facey (author of A Fortunate Life)spent much of his life in the early 1900’s before the Depression.

We arrived in Katanning mid-afternoon, booked into a VERY basic van park behind the BP Service Station and had one of the best hot showers in a few weeks. Even though it was cold and miserable we decided to go for a walk to the nearest pub, about 1klm away – we spotted it on the way in! Good choice – cosy, open fire, great wine (Henscke $40 a bottle retail for $7 per glass!) and excellent dinner. So good in fact that we stayed on, drank more, and got a taxi home!

Stats: 310 klms; $30 per night; bloody freezing!
