Mike and I have been enjoying revisiting some favorite spots: the Prado Museum, the Caixa Forum, and taking walks around this wonderful city. It is clearly a city on vacation because many cafés, restaurants, and small shops have closed for the month of August. It’s quieter here, and plenty warm!
Cris and Claire, Jordan and Katelyn arrived on August 5th around 4:30 pm. Jordan spent lots of time visiting our house when he and my sons were young boys. Mike and I were delighted to attend his and Katelyn's wedding in St. Thomas almost two years ago.
After the four of them settled in, we walked down to Olavides Plaza nearby and had a delicious meal of tapas, then strolled over to our favorite mercado for supplies. They learned the neighborhood, and found a favorite sidewalk bar nearby that they visited after Mike and I went to bed. One day, the young folks made their way to the soccer stadium and enjoyed a nice tour. On another busy day, we walked to the Prado Museum, followed by a walk around Retiro Park (which is across the city), followed by a walk to see Templo Debod: we put almost nine miles on our feet that day!
The kids also enjoyed day trips to Toledo and Segovia while here. One night, the six of us headed over to Teatro La Latina to see Rafael Amargo and his troupe of excellent dancers perform modern dance based on Flamenco. As planned, the kids took a train to Barcelona August 11-13 and had a great time seeing the sights and sampling the food. The big news: when they returned to Madrid, Claire was wearing a lovely engagement ring! Jordan and Katelyn were in on the plan and gave them some privacy so Cris could propose at Park Güell, that gorgeous space designed by Gaudí. Cris and Claire have been together for four years and we wish them many more happy years together. The family grows. We said adios on August 14, when they returned to Boston tired, happy, and in love with Madrid!
