My adventures around the world travel blog

left Arica on the 10:30 bus, 4 hours later, driving through the desert, I arrived in Iquique that sits on a narrow terrace at the foot of the coastal range, which abruptly rises 600m above the city. Blocked by the mountains, it has sprawled north and, especially, south along the coast. Iquique's 19th-century mining boom is still evident in its preserved Georgian mansions, the Victorian clock tower on Plaza Prat. Some architecture has been preserved, but the town's focus is now on its new glitzy casino and mall. Saturday afternoon, the historic center was almost empty, I headed along the ped mall Baquedano towards the beach.

Sunday, National Independence Day, I decided to leave for Antofagasto on the 12 o clock bus.
