We took a day to visit the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. It is a huge campus at the base of the Rocky Mountains. The buildings (one with a tail like a plane) and Cadet Chapel are certainly beautiful and a very modern design. Like West Point, the campus was immaculate – no paper or beer cans lying around. Unlike West Point, the campus and buildings do not ooze with US history and a who's who in our military history. The Air Force did not become a separate branch of the military until 1947, and the first graduation was in 1960.
While there, we watched a brief film on the cadets’ first year - it is certainly a grueling year with 6 weeks of basic training.
