|this time I traveled by plane from Arequipa to Tacna (25 minutes) and taxi colectivo to Arica, where Chile and Peru once fought bloody skirmishes. It is a popular year-round resort (though too cold right now to swim). Took a room at the central Hotel MarAzul.
Despite its aridity, this clean city occupies an attractive site at the foot of El Morro (walked up there in the morning), a spectacular headland that offers sweeping ocean and desert views.
Famous for his Parisian tower, Alexandre Gustave Eiffel designed many prefabricated landmarks in Latin America, including the Ex-Aduana de Arica (the former customhouse) and the Iglesia San Marcos. this church was prefabricated in Paris and assembled on site. The entire structure is made of cast iron, laminated and painted to look less metallic.
