On our rest day before moving on to the Vosges mountains we decided to explore the two local spa towns of Contrexeville and Vittel. In Contrexeville you could see the former splendour but it felt a bit run down. Vittel was a much nicer town with the original Victorian spa buildings, gardens and present day race course. However, there was very few people around and Baden-Baden in Germany and Harrogate and Buxton in the UK have nothing to worry about in terms of competition.
Vittel was pleasant to wander around but lacked the ambiance of other spa towns we have visited.
