This morning, we did get up at the crack of dawn for sunrise overlooking Ayers Rock. It was beautiful, and very chilly.

The wind was howling through the Valley of the Winds, where we started our next hike. To get ourselves warmed up a bit, we hauled out the camp stove and had a hot cup of soup right there in the parking lot of The Olgas. As other cars pulled into the lot, their occupants looked longingly at our steaming cups. Ha ha, suckers! We'll sell you some for $20!!!

Hiking in and around the Olgas was really neat. The Olgas are huge rock formations not far from Ayers Rock. Unlike the base walk around Ayers Rock, the Valley of the Winds hike gets you right in and on the rocks themselves. There were lots of wild flowers blooming, which made the valley that much more beautiful.

We decided to adhere to the wishes of the Aboriginals and not climb the Rock. Ayers Rock is a site of religious importance to them. Instead, we staked out a great spot for sunset and were treated to a great show. The red colour of the rock took on many shades of red as the sun went down. It was incredible.
