It's about 500 kilometers from Campeche to Cancun so I arranged to return to Valladolid for our last night, leaving just a 2 hour drive the next day to reach the airport in Cancun. The drive went easily. A few stops along the way so the Policia could check us out. Didn't have to pay a single "mordita" the whole trip.
Back to Casa Hipil. The Aussies went shopping and I caught up on the journal. Later we went out to dinner at El Meson del Marques, the local Colonial Hotel and hot spot. Another excellent meal. And the usual round of tequila inspired cocktails.
Our final day went well. Arrived at the airport to be greeted by Edgar. If you're even on the Yucatan remember Edgar and ISIS rental cars.
The Aussies are off to New Orleans and a pilgrimage to Graceland. I suspect they're a bit tired of ruinas and colonial architecture and are ready to party.
One final note.
Earlier this year I lost a good friend, Hughes Cherry. We had traveled to Mexico with two companions back in the late winter of 1968. I remember Tampico, Tamazunchale, Sanborn's House of Tiles, Teotihuacan. Good times. Some really memorable moments. What I'll always remember about Hughes was his dry humor, his intelligence, his uncommon decency. The world would be a much better place with more people like Hughes in it.
