We set off to make our way down to Tauranga where we were to meet up with Nicki and Kent who we had travelled with nearly 9 months ago. We thought we would drive around the Coromandel peninsula as it has nice scenery.
We drove through the town of Thames and up the coast along winding coastal roads with great views out to islands and across lush green scenery. We stopped in Coromandel town for a little look around and had lunch in a pie and chips shop ! We then carried on down to a hot water beach where it is possible to dig holes in the sand to reach thermal pools.
We then reached Waihi where gold was discovered in 1878. The Martha mine became the richest in NZ. The mine still produces a million dollars of gold every week although it takes a ton of rock to yield 3g to 6g of gold ! We took a look a the mine and then carried on the rest of our journey down to Tauranga
