After a very pleasant and busy sea day yesterday (guest lecture, excellent dancing lesson and a warmer swim and Jacuzzi ) in calmer seas in spite of quite a strong wind we arrived at Funchal, Madiera for our first port. In spite of getting up in the dark at 7am it was still 10am before we left the cruise ship! We were lucky as the weather was warm 22degree with hazy sunshine but the low clouds were over the tops of the hills so we decided it was not worth going up the cable car to the Tropical gardens.
After much debate we decided to try walking one of the urban levada Levada Dos Piornais which runs east above Funchal ending above the bay Cais du Carvau. From there we hoped to come back along the promenade just above the bay (8+mile walk round).
It was quite a climb up to the levada but it was worth it and we managed to drop down to the promenade above the beach by going down some very steep steps and a slope through a banana plantation, then through a hotel descending 10 floors! and then down more steps. Not sure what we would have done if the hotel had not let us go down their lift!
It was a lovely interesting promenade back with little cafes and view points most of the way although there was a bit of a slog by the road up and over to the docks for the last mile or so. All in all a successful if not rather tiring days walk.
