As it was foggy this morning, and we didn’t feel like cooking, we drove just across the I95 overpass and had breakfast at McDonalds. On the road by 9, the fog lifted and the route was fine. Once we entered Georgia, I95 widened into 3 lanes and was in excellent condition. As we could not check in until close to 3, we stopped for lunch at a Pilot with a Denny’s, which was excellent. Driving down and finding warm temperatures and blue sky reminded me of when, as a child, we used to come to Florida – it felt like such a magical place!
We used our Google Maps to find the campground, and it turns out that Google has the wrong entrance! We were several miles out of our way on a very narrow road, but John handled it beautifully, and when I gave Google Maps the main park entrance, we were golden! Once in the gate, we drove another 3 miles on the “Canopy Road” out to the campground at 15mph. We had to be very careful to miss the overhanging branches of the Live Oaks – most had been trimmed to 14’ clearance, but there were several places marked where we had to move to the center of the road. It was an interesting trip in!
Once set up, we drove out to Jon and Judy’s new home – what a beautiful place! We walked out to the beach – just steps outside of their door, and then took a ride for them to show us the island – only 13 miles long and 2.5 miles wide – we can see why they fell in love with this place. They prepared a delightful dinner and we had lots of fun catching up.
