The famous bridge in Avignon, Pont Saint-Bénézet, also known as the Pont d'Avignon, was a part of one of the most important pilgrimage routes between Italy and Spain (11). This bridge is so well-known that it has it's own little song: "Sur le Pont d'Avignon l'on y danse, l'on y danse, Sur le pont d'Avignon l'on y danse tout en rond." This translates into: "On the bridge of Avignon, they are dancing, they are dancing, on the bridge of Avignon, they are dancing all around." I learned this children's song when I was in middle school French class and when I was finally able to go to France, it was really cool to actually see the bridge in person. So if you've possibly taken French or just have heard of that song, the Pont d'Avignon would be an interesting sight to see.
The night we went down by the water where the bridge is, it was gorgeous out. It was the perfect weather and I can vividly remember the way the bridge was lit up and how it reflected off the sparkling water. I couldn't help but smile when I saw it. As simple as it may look in pictures, seeing it in person in that type of setting is just amazing. The sound of the water slowly lapping against the waterline added to the effect of its beauty. For those travelers who this appeals to, Avignon is a perfect match for you.
