Our Winter Adventure from October 2015 until late spring of 2016 travel blog

There is not much to see in the ocean but the sunset...

Not a good picture, but the moon was gorgeous and gave good...

Cruise ships (the Caribbean Princess) look like carousels and remain visible from...

Well, what a trip this has been…if it can go wrong, it has!!! Well, maybe not everything. We have had wonderful, warm weather which made our ocean passage especially nice. We left Cricket Cove Marina yesterday at 0700 and motored out of Little River Inlet (our first passage out of this inlet). The inlet is great for daylight passages, but it has temporary, unlit channel marks between the breakwaters that would preclude a nighttime passage. We motor sailed, paralleling the coast as far as Winyah Inlet at Georgetown, SC. Then the wind came more behind us and died, so we motored the rest of the way to Fernandina Beach. At the Charleston harbor channel, ship traffic was an issue. Two ships passed out of the channel before we got there, but then we had two ships (one outgoing and one incoming) that we had to avoid. Let us just say, that we stayed clear of them and headed on south toward Fernandina Beach. We had a beautiful moonrise with a fairly full moon and, therefore, had good light most of the night. For the most part, we were alone out there. Most of the trip went smoothly, though we did have to talk to the Coast Guard about whether we could enter the St. Mary’s channel to Fernandina because they were hailing boats about staying away from the submarine that was exiting the channel. We just hung around outside until the sub had cleared the channel. So that was all of the good part. The bad part is that the alternator installation was not correct. The engine is overheating (NEVER happened before) and the tachometer is jumping all over the place. The batteries are charging, but not like they should. What a disappointment. And, of course, we are not near the people who worked on it…

We can continue with the alternator as it is, but we are babying it. We will move on to St. Augustine tomorrow. It is supposed to be another sunny, warm day.
