A New Chapter...for awhile travel blog

Our patio, firepit and view at the Luray KOA

Along Skyline Drive

And again

The Shenandoah Valley...the KOA is somewhere back in there

More valley

The Queen overlooking her kingdom

Last one

We were all set up in the beautiful Luray KOA by 3:15 after a just over 4 hour drive through parts of 4 states – PA, MD, WV and finally VA. The campground is very nice, but the surrounding scenery is what makes this a great spot. We are in a valley with fall colors on the mountains to the east and west and Shenandoah National Park to the southeast, which is our target for tomorrow's travels.

Skyline Drive runs through SNP for 105 miles from Front Royal, VA south to Waynesboro. Today, we did 66 of those miles in 2 different sessions, from Front Royal to Swift Run Gap. Since the weather was dang near perfect today, it made the great views even better. Both the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive are similar roads; they both follow near the crest of the mountains with spectacular views from a number of overlooks, but in my opinion SD has better views of the valleys on either side. One thing is consistent though; the lack of any wildlife...we saw a chipmunk and a turkey vulture today...that was about it. One of the Visitor's Centers has a journal listing recent wildlife sightings and today it showed a variety, including a momma bear and cubs along the drive so we had high hopes. However, it also listed an elephant and zebra sighting so I doubt it's accuracy.

I have called FL Senator Rubio's office today to check on our White House tour and it's not looking promising so we have decided to start motoring south tomorrow. I suspect that a visit to Tallahassee is in our future, but I'm not sure how many detours we will take on the way. Could be more than one…

Oh, and Happy Birthday Vicky!
