Mesa Verde entrance, statue depicting climbing native

Cliff dwelling

Hiking trail

Petroglyphs

View from top of mountain

Off to Mesa Verde National Park. To Visitor Center, thru entrance with our Senior Pass and then up 22 miles of winding road to Spruce Tree House. Park Ranger at entrance told us he was looking to transfer to NC "coastal islands".

Walked to cliff dwellings thru light rain showers then took Petroglyph Trail. We did not know what we were undertaking..the 2.4 mile trail was steep and rocky and pretty much circled a mountain before you got to the petroglyphs! There was some thunder and rain. There were few people on trail (one couple watching birds and one French family) But we made it to the carvings and once past that and on top of the mountain the going was easier and pretty flat.

Drove back down, stopping at Far View, which was village, farming area that predated cliff dwellings.

Left Colorado and back to New Mexico, driving I 40 thru bad storm with hail and heavy rain. Overnite at private campground at Grants-Bars RV just off interstate. Great rate of $20, but mostly "long term" campers and stable next door and train tracks nearby.
