Lunch overlooking the river

Saturday 12th Sept

Left Tamarite, through the valley south towards Flix, where we picked up the river L'Ebre. Stunning scenery, mountains and valleys all the way down to Tortosa, where we turned into the delta area of the river,a national parc which was part swamps, part rice fields. The Aire we headed for was at a restaurant with camping, a gorgeous outlook over the reed beds at Port dels Alfacs. Space for 40 m homes but it was only half full by night time. Had a look at restaurant but the menu was based on seafood and neither of us are keen, so went back to cook chicken garlic chilli curry. Excellent it was too! Flies were the only fly in the ointment. Hundreds of tiny ones with some bigger so and sos too, soon the Lady's window sills and lit areas were covered despite the fly screens. Swat was used extensively, spray all over yet they persisted. Managed to keep them out of our food and drink but they were a nuisance. By 10pm gave in, went to bed with only the 2 windows in the lounge open, we always have a bedroom window open but not tonight, rather suffer the heat. Next morning dead bodies everywhere, took ages to clean up. And still the bigger ones were coming in, so we decided move on again. Shame, as there were lots of unidentified birds we wanted to see closer but couldn't stand another evening there. We should have known it was alive with flies, the amount of swallows and martins feeding. Would go back again, in winter! Blue has cut a nail/claw so that needed attention, he caught his fair share of flies all evening, snapping every few minutes.

Off next morning, this time stopped at Benicarlo for mid morning cuppie as we knew we could park next to a "dogs allowed" area on the beach. He went straight in the sea had a good swim around which did his paw good and exercised him too. It also kept him cool all day with his wet coat.

Got past Valencia easily Sunday afternoon and on to a brilliant Aire, beautifully kept, on edge of El Palomar. €5 for the night, inc water and use of washer. We were the only ones there, so Blue could go in and out as he wanted,a very pleasant overnight stay, and better still no flies!
