Pretty Damn Nice! travel blog

We can actually see surrounding mountains!!

The winds and rain sprinkles last night helped to clear the smoke out of the air. Plus, traveling another 100 miles east also helped. We were very happy to see blue skies and sunshine this morning, the first in many weeks. We could actually see surrounding mountains that we did not know were there. The news says the rain, as slight as it was, also helped to calm the wildfires, at least here in Montana.

We enjoyed our drive this morning. The scenery was mostly beautiful farm land, with lots of pastures with horses and a few cattle. Everything but the foothills was green. There appears to be adequate water as sprinklers were going in almost all pastures. We climbed slowly today to an elevation of around 4,200 ft over our 100 mile journey.

At one point, we were right alongside an empty coal train. We were going about a half a mile per hour faster than the train so we were slowly gaining on the engine. There was a second engine going backwards at the end of the train where a caboose would normally be. I assume that they take the train to wherever they fill it with coal and then they return wherever they empty it, not having to turn the engines around. We had almost overtook the engine when we had to stop at a rest stop. We never caught up with the train again.

We left Missoula early and arrived in our destination early, around 10:00 am. We will be staying the next week, over the Labor Day holiday, in Deer Lodge, Montana, at the Indian Creek Campground. The park is located behind a large Conoco truck stop, but it is actually quite pretty. It sits quite a ways behind the truck stop so highway noise is at a minimum. Our site is located next to the only large tree in the park, but the sun sets directly in front of us, so afternoon shade is minimal. Thankfully, the temp is much cooler here with a high of around 75 today ... perfect!

We are also excited to have clear skies again so that we can get out and explore some of the area. There are some interesting museums and some neat sounding road trips to see. The weather guessers are predicting some rain later in the week with cooler temps, so hopefully the smokeless skies will continue.
