At Pula we stopped and visited a well preserved Roman amphitheatre that originally seated 20,000 and is still in use today for concerts , and then headed north up the western side of the peninsula again stopping on the way for a picnic lunch. The little markets are great - for the price of the ingredients the deli part of the shop will make up sandwiches to take with you, so another picnic stop on the roadside. Finally about 4pm we stopped at Umag. Nothing in the Lonely Planet book that we had, but its a very pretty town with a nice promenade and lots of restaurants. We have found the sobes (private rooms in houses) to be good value - here the cost was 22 Euros per couple, and we have been able to do our washing as well.
Although we didn't spend much time on the Istrian Peninsula we found it very attractive and enjoyed our stops.
