|I am way behind so there are a lot of days and miles to make up in the next 3 entries. HOLD ON. On Friday, July 17, we left Salt Lake City as planned and drove to Elko, NV. Our previous driving experience in Nevada has been in the mid and southern part of the state. Northern Nevada is very different.
There is a lot of ranching in the area around Elko, which is a good sized town. Bing Crosby even had a couple of ranches there in the 40s and 50s. Everyone thinks of Las Vegas when you say Nevada but there are casinos everywhere. Truck stops have small casinos and most bars/restaurants have slots. It is not legal to operate a brothel in Clark County, where Las Vegas is, but that is not the case in most of Nevada – I think there is one other county. Elko had a few of these establishments and Tom had to have a photo – from the car window.
Part of the Humboldt National Forest is just south of Elko and we decided to take a recommended drive up there and have a picnic in the mountains. The drive was beautiful as the pictures show. We had lunch along a creek that reminded me of picnics along the Pecos River.
There was some minor vehicle maintenance to take care of in Elko and since we only stayed two nights (our shortest to date) we did not see much of the city. On Sunday we were off to Dayton, NV.
