Thursday 23rd April

Today we have to be off the Peninsula by 1.00pm because they are putting up road blocks and locking it down for the commemorations. There is a strong presence of army, police etc.

Today was a very interesting day. We went to “The Nek/Walkers Ridge” First. This piece of real estate was hotly contested for, as it was the access to the highest points where the armies could control the Peninsula. Unfortunately we had a lot of bumbling generals and majors who tried to make orders from the water, as well as badly timed the attack. They sent the “colonials” young men (light horse 10th & 11th) over a narrow piece of land with only bayonets fixed and no ammunition in their guns. 150 men at a time only to be mowed down by the Turks, with machine guns and rifles. Our poor men were decimated and the generals kept on sending them over to it reached about 700 men laying dead. It was a massacre – and the people who ordered the attack were out on the water – not following what was going on. Most of these men were buried in unmarked graves and their names were later put on a wall.

We went to Lone Pine – where we had the only win in the campaign. Neatly marked with graves and seating set up for the 25th April.

Quinns Post where Don was and where Paul’s grandfather fought close to. Two of Paul’s grandfather’s friends were buried there. We took a photo of Paul, Jim, Mavis & Don.
