What could be better on a cold, damp day than BBQ?
We think BBQ is great no matter what the weather but today, the BBQ was in Mercedes, Texas, where the Texas State Championship BBQ Cook off, called “Smokin’ on the Rio” was being held.
Chris & Gia drove over to our place and rode with us to the Fairgrounds in Mercedes.
We parked and walked a short distance to the entrance where we paid the $5 per person entrance fee, and walked into the smoke.
The four of us walked around pausing at many of the smoking BBQ pits for a taste of the delicacies being passed out by the various cooking teams.
The temperature hovered in the mid forties and a stiff wind made it feel even colder.
We toughed it out, deciding not to be judges for the chicken or to stay and judge the ribs, because we were so full after tasting the assorted meats, all of which were very tasty indeed.
We drove home in the steady misty rain, and then toured the resort where Chris & Gia are spending the winter.
They showed us where they have their RV parked and the area they plan to stay in next winter.
We finally returned home, said so long to our friends by exchanging hugs, and went indoors to watch some basketball on TV.
It looks like some oyster stew is on the menu for tonight, along with some TV or maybe curling up with our books to read before getting a good night of sleep.
Temps tomorrow are supposed to be in the mid seventies again.
