Devonport Harbour on the Mersey River, Devonport, Tasmania

We left Melbourne early in the morning on the Spirit of Tasmania II having spent the night in a nearby campground. We will explore that city more thoroughly upon our return in three weeks.

It is a ten-hour journey from Melbourne across Bass Strait to Devonport, Tasmania. The trip began quite uneventfully; then we discovered a television set carrying the NFC Conference Championship game between the Seattle SeaHawks and the Green Bay Packers. We unabashedly cheered for the Hawks and were thrilled when they won. We are now faced with the challenge of finding a way to watch the Super Bowl. We have been quite surprised at how many Australians follow American football, so maybe we will find a way. We sat near a gentleman cheering for the “other” team.

Like every Australian state, Tasmania has a lot to see, but we are getting limited in our time left to see it. As a result, many of our stops will be brief with just enough time allowed to learn a little history and visit the highlights. We will begin along the Northwest Coast.
