Today was 318 miles. We are in the middle of the incredible 879 miles of I-10 across Texas! The same road in the same state in a straight line east and west. That distance always blows me away! Almost a thousand miles in the same state, on the same road! This is a big country!

Van Horn Texas is a very small town on I-10. It is probably the biggest town we have seen all day, which means that almost all we have seen all day is open country. Most of Van Horn consists of travel services. There are 2 big truck stops, a half-dozen gas stations, one small market, one restaurant, numerous tire and diesel repair shops, and a half dozen RV parks. All packed within a mile.

The railroad industry is alive and well in the West! A main line runs through Van Horn, parallel to the main drag and about 200 feet away. We are on the other side of the main drag and probably 600 feet total from the railroad, which means we get intimate with every train that comes through. There is about one per hour at night and 2-3 per hour in the daytime. And they are really long and fast moving, all freight and containers.
