Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies

Staircase of 686 steps

We visited the town of Lamego where this very Sanctuary was. From the top of the town we walked down the 686 steps (yes, that sounds daunting, but actually it was terraced with beautiful gardens & blue tile fresco along the way). At the bottom of the staircase we walked to a restaurant where we enjoyed a sample of the local traditional specialties, such as the Bolas de Lamego (bread filled with smoked ham) & the Espumante (Portughese sparkling wine).

That afternoon after returning to the ship, Duane & Peyton took off on a bus ride up the mountain to Quinta do Seixo for a port wine tasting. The large bus took a single lane road up the mountain with some serious switchbacks & Peyton was convinced that at some point when the bus had to back up for oncoming traffic that the bus would plummet them to the bottom of the mountain. For someone who flies an airplane, which most people think is fearless, he was quite a happy camper to live another day in Portugal! Guess the ride down wasn't as worrisome after the port wine tasting...LOL!
