Nila & Bob Tales of the Oregon Trail travel blog

It all started yesterday when we got gas in Fort Bragg. We had left Highway 101 and drove the narrow, winding road to the coast. It was cool again and fog hung over the ocean. We stopped for gas in Fort Bragg at $2.72 a gallon and felt grateful to be getting it so cheap. It was nearly $3.00 per gallon most places in CA. Bob noticed we had a flat tire. We called Good Sam Road Service to change the tire. After waiting about an hour the helpful, friendly service man showed up. He found a place that could fix the tire in Fort Bragg. The service man there noticed that our brake pads were worn out and down to metal on metal. (We had been wondering why they squeaked so badly coming over the mountains to the coast.) They could not fix the breaks until Thurs.

We decided to stay in the area an extra day and take the RV in early Thursday morning to get it fixed. This morning we walked Caspar Beach next to our RV Park. We went to Mendocino to have lunch and look at the shops. Mendocino is a very small town of less than 1200 people. But there were also probably about 1200 tourists to fill up all the Victorian B&Bs, eat at all the cute restaurants and buy the overpriced goods in the boutiques and art galleries. It was hard to find a place to park. We found a restaurant above a shop that had a great view of the foggy beach and served a very tasty hot crab sandwich.

With all the B & Bs, shops and eateries, there was no room in Mendocino for a Laundromat. We went to Fort Bragg to do our laundry. The two towns are very close.

Bob repaired the blinds that had been broken for over a year. It took him about 2 hours. I was so proud of him.

Tomorrow we get the RV brakes fixed, have breakfast at the Egghead (a restaurant down the street from the repair place) that we have eaten at before and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Then we head to Napa to visit family before we head for home.
