Nila & Bob Tales of the Oregon Trail travel blog

Yesterday we drove south along the Redwood Highway through fog and soaring forests. To our right were abysses that sank into nothingness. We drove through Eureka, which looks poverty-stricken and has many hard-luck people on the street either begging for help or seeming too proud to do that. We drove through the Humboldt Redwood State Park along the famous Avenue of the Giants. Old growth redwoods are very impressive. The road was narrow with huge redwoods growing right next to the road. Bob felt like he was dodging redwoods and the RVs and logging trucks coming the other direction.

We saw several people riding bikes along the scenic parts of 101 in Oregon and California. There were more in CA. Sometimes the bikers share a rather narrow highway with the trucks, RVs and cars. It gets a little scary at times.

We drove south to Garberville and Benbow. We stayed at the Benbow Inn several years ago. It is a very well appointed bed and breakfast Victorian Inn. We drove through another grove of big redwoods. We are staying at a private RV park that has little to recommend it except it is handy and has hookups.

My back feels much better this morning and I can move without pain. There seemed no particular cause. It certainly is limiting and depressing to have pain like that. This morning I did some back exercises and took a walk around the campground. The forested mountains around us are misty, but here in the valley it is clear and cool.
