We left Gold Beach yesterday and drove south through the fog to California. The vistas from the cliffs and bridges were abysses that brought mystery and fear to my soul. The fog cleared as we drove inland on Highway 101. We stopped in Crescent City to get information about state parks. The sun was out. As we passed the beach, we looked to see if we could any nude bathers were running in the surf. When we stayed here 3 years ago a shapely woman went nude bathing in the ocean. Bob was very interested. But alas no nude women to titillate us.
We stayed overnight in the redwoods (and alders also) in Mill Creek State Park. This area was cut in the 1920s, so the second growth of 80-85 years is tall, but not the old growth huge trunks. Here and there are the huge stumps of the old growth redwoods, many of them serving as nurse logs to the new growth trees. It was a beautiful area.
This morning the forest was again swathed in fog. Bob went running, while I climbed an old path that followed the railroad trestle that been built in the 20s to haul out the huge redwood logs.
