We had another great day exploring downtown Gering, Nebraska. Gering is known for Scotts Bluff National Monument as well as the famous Oregon Trail Days annual celebration. Our goal today was to visit the Runza Restaurant and try one of the famous Runza sandwiches. We didn’t know what we would think about this unusual burger until we tried one, it was delicious. This special Nebraska sandwich all started in 1949 with the Original Runza® Sandwich. Homemade dough made from scratch everyday — stuffed full of ground beef, onions, cabbage, and secret spices—and then baked fresh and served hot. Cabbage in a burger did not sound great at first but you can barely taste the cabbage, we will definitely go back for another one before leaving town.
We love this little western town, you can take a hike in history’s footsteps and touch the wagon wheel ruts of the Oregon Trail. The town is surrounded with farm grounds and grazing cattle, museums, quaint downtown galleries and shops, restaurants and more. Gering sits amidst natural scenic beauty with a population of 7,800 residents and immediately across the North Platte River from Scottsbluff and a population of 14,700.
There are signs and wagons all around town letting you know you are driving on the Old Oregon Trail. It is a cool town not to be missed if you are in the area. I will let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Check back later for more from Nebraska.
