June 9 Day 11 riding. 16 k return ride to Everest base camp 5200m then 16 to camp.

A fairly mild night, surprised to see ice on the tents. Clear blue sky. A few wisps of cloud over Everest. Pete up 6am for photos. Packed up camp after 9am breakfast. Most of us rode to EBC. Marg and Jan left @8am to walk it. Marg walked beyond the prayer flags on the hill, there was no barrier arm across the road, and no legible sign advising a $200 US fine, nor anyone to tell her not to go on. Our guide Tennor got a ph call to pick her up asap!!. Fortunately she wasn’t carrying a camera and wasn’t fined. Big Chinese Brother is watching everywhere! EBC is deserted, only a couple of empty buildings and one army vehicle, no personnel. Couple of the girls got souvenirs, rosary beads, jewellery etc at the souvenir market. Many photos made at the prayer flags. Cooks made a celebration Everest cake for lunch. Quick visit to the world’s highest monastery. 16k ride downhill , 300m over the way we came yesterday was made a little easier with a tailwind. Still feel shaken to bits, no time to look at scenery , eyes focused on picking a track through the boulders, potholes, corrugations. Simon missed the turnoff to camp and did an extra 30ks, before the staff caught him up with the vehicle. Much warmer 300m lower, its 6.30pm, we’re sitting in the sun in short sleeves. Did laundry in the stream. Can’t believe our luck with the weather, 2 weeks before, EBC under 2 ft of snow.
