As we left Portland this morning, it was for the most part an easy drive through town. The route west on U.S. 26 was smooth and uneventful. But then we were listening to the GPS and turned left at S.R. 53. This option was only 17 miles to our destination versus following U.S. 26 to U.S. 101 which would have added an additional 30 some miles to the trip. Well we should have taken the longer route. S.R. 53 was definitely not a road for long motorhomes or pickups with 5th wheels as there are many very sharp curves, no shoulders and thus a dangerous situation on many of the hairpin type curves. The lack of smooth surface didn't help either. So by the time we negotiated our left turn onto Highway 101 south, we were both ready to get off the road.
We will be at the Paradise Cove Resort and Marina in Wheeler for the week under our R.O.D. membership. We opted to be across the highway from the main part of this park without the view in order to take advantage of the more roomy spaces and 50 amp power. Under sunny skies, it was a great way to settle in after dealing with route 53!
It's now Sunday morning and we have seen a fair amount of rain and patches of sunshine only occasionally, but after all this is the Oregon Coast. Both of us have plenty of good books to read and during the dry patches, we try to pedal our bikes around the area. Even though it doesn't feel as warm here as it does inland, it's a wonderful spot to start our summer.
