This geocache was a fun and very informative stop. It was our first cache for the area of Craig, Colorado. It was pretty easy to find. We learned a lot about the history of Mount Harris. Don’t miss this cool geocache if you are near the town of Craig, Colorado.

Paste of information from the geocache owner below:

Geocache name is: Short Shots Mt. Harris Information Stop

The town of Mt. Harris was founded in 1914. It lasted until 1958 when the coal ran out. The mine was opened on June 12th. 1914 and the first load of coal was shipped that fall. That was before all the government red tape that is required to start a mine in our time. It takes years to just get permitted now, but it is good we are concerned about our environment and health.

My father was born in the town of Mt. Harris and spent a very happy childhood here amongst the beauty of the valley and atop the rim rocks that surround you. He has spent years researching and compiling information about his hometown and hopes to have a book published soon.

My father has since passed on to the great coal mines in the sky. His book was published after his death and is available at many local area book stores and museums. It will bring the story of Mt. Harris to life if you care to learn more about this amazing little coal city. It is called "Remembering Mt. Harris". His name is Chuck Mack. Be sure to take in the informational sign located by this cache.
