I wasn't feeling good at all when I left La Linea. Some celebration was going on somewhere near or in my hotel the night before and I had gotten no sleep at all between my cold and the noise.

I had about a three block walk to the bus station. It was a very nice, comfy bus that made it to Cadiz early. The Cadiz station was also the station for the trains and it was only two blocks from the cruise ship port. All very convenient. Since there were no available maps of Cadiz to orient me, since I didn't feel well and since I knew my hotel was a little bit of a walk I gave in and got a taxi.

I was shocked when I got to my hotel. I don't know what I was thinking! Maybe I knew the place I had been in at La Linea was cheap and I allowed myself to upscale to balance it out when I booked it. This hotel is a Wyndham Property. I knew it was going to be right across the street from the beach. And WHAT A BEACH!!! WOW - this is living!

I was very early. The bus got in at just after 9:00 am and check in was not until 3:00 but several other hotels had let me in early so I thought I'd ask and if it wasn't ready I'd put my luggage in a safe room and go out on the beach. He said my room was not ready but he offered an upgrade for 10 Euros each night, it would have an ocean view, be about twice the size of my original single and if I was willing to switch to a smoking room I could have it immediately. I jumped at the chance! I was feeling really bad and just wanted to lie down.

I took a 3 hour nap and had a second wind. I wanted to walk the beach but this is very white sand, it was about 1:00 pm by then and the sand was HOT. So I walked along the boardwalk...and walked and walked and walked.

I got a couple cookies called Sultan's Coco with coconut in them in the old part of town. They were soft inside and crispy outside. Somehow the coconut flavor was there but the stringiness of the coconut was not. They were fabulous. I also got some gelato on the walk - a blend of lemon and strawberry.

I ended up walking about 3 hours, came back and took another nap and at 7:00 was ready to go out to find dinner. I could not live in Spain. Before 7:00 is happy hour. At 7:00 all real restaurants close up until 8:00. Only places serving tapas are open at 7:00. Barcelona was playing someone on TV and all the bars were crowded with fans. OSU football does not come close to the fever of these people and their soccer. So I had to wait until 8:00 until I could get a real dinner. I went to a place specializing in meat. They like their pork here in Spain. Up until now I had only ham. This time I tried a pork loin dish. Wow! I've never tasted anything like it! It was pork. It was seasoned like we would at home but the meat was just so very much better. They served it with fried potatoes. I really liked it but I was so tired I could only eat half of it.

[NOTE: You DO NOT ask for a doggy bag - either here or in France. It is simply not done and they get very offended. One restaurant we went to in Paris during the Road Scholar tour the guide told us this and one of the women insisted on taking home the remainder of a salad. There was a take out Chinese restaurant next door and she went over and bought to-go boxes from them and put her salad in one of them - it caused a lot of consternation from others in our group]

So I went home and fell asleep almost immediately.
