Beautiful drive from Durango to Trinidad on Route 160 East. Traversing two mountain ranges - San Juan and Sangre de Cristo - was a bit challenging because of the high winds. The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is a short distance from 160 near Alamosa and I think it lost lots of sand today. The air was thick with dust. The journal map shows a straight line from Durango to Trinidad. Quite the contrary, there are tons of curves , dips and rises which makes for an interesting drive.

It took about 4 hours to complete today's leg. I detoured 4 miles to check out a small quaint town called LaVeta but not much was open on Sunday. As a matter of fact, not much was open in all the small towns I passed through ( still had to slow down from speed limit 75 to speed limit 25).

Really nothing to stop and see on the way - just the incredible views. Tomorrow I drive a pretty desolate route to Kansas. Just hope the scenery is as gorgeous as what I've been treated to in Colorado.
