After a late breakfast we caught the bus to Talum at about 11:00am. Only about an hour to get to our hotel in Talum. Dropped our bags and headed to the nearby ruins.
Tulum is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city. The ruins are situated on 12-meter tall cliffs. Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Mayas; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have been the cause of its demise. Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.
It was very hot while we walked through the ruins. Luckily after walking through the ruins you can walk a short way down to a very nice beach. It was pretty hot on the beach but we found a nice shady spot in a cafe on the beach. The sand was very good and the Caribbean sea cool and pleasent.
