Chateau Gates

?Meteorite Rocks

Heading North again today. Drizzly start to the day. Decided to head for Oradour-sur-Glane about 130 miles to the North East of Bordeaux. It was the scene of a massacre by Nazi soldiers in 1944, apparently a whole village was rounded up & killed. It was the 70th anniversary last year & I saw some news coverage about it on TV.

We stopped for lunch at Rochechouart on the way & got a close look at a fancy chateau which unfortunately was closed so we didn't get to go inside. Also apparently millions of years ago a massive meteorite 1.5km in dia. & weighing many millions of tons struck the Earth nearby causing a crater some 20-25 kms in diameter. There is a museum in the town with some fragments outside but unfortunately like the chateau it was closed.

By the time we got to Oradour, found the Aire there & set up it was after 4pm. I unloaded Doris & we headed across to the other side of town where we found the ruins of the old town & a memorial centre to the massacre. Unfortunately 4pm turned out to be the time that they closed the memorial centre to visitors & the only access to the ruins of the old town is through the centre so we will have to wait till tomorrow.

At least the weather cleared up & we got some nice evening sunshine to end the day with. Fingers crossed for a dry start tomorrow.

Film night - Viv nearly collapsed laughing tonight. We watched a film called "Bad Granpa" about a grandfather who tries to return his grandson to the boys father after the mother gets sent to prison. It was hilarious & we were both in stitches from the beginning. The situations the pair got into were unbelievably funny. Highly recommended!
