The Capper Nomads Europe Adventure travel blog

The day started wet and miserable so the morning was spent doing domestics. Just after lunch the rain stopped and there was a glint of sunshine so we took the opportunity to head south to Peniche. The town is a major fishing port but had an unusual the rugged coast line just west of the town at the Cabo Carvoeiro peninsula. The waves crashed against the rocks and the rocks themselves in some places looked as if they were going to splinter into many pieces.

The town itself was of no great beauty but it did have the 16th Fortaleza. This was one of Salazar’s (Prime Minister and virtual dictator in the manner of Franco and Mussolini. of Portugal between 1932 and 1968) most notorious jails. Unfortunately it was not open to visit but even from the outside it looked a formidable place.

By time we got back to base it had started to rain again!
